Here are six summer side-hustles for students seeking summer work: Dog walking and house sitting Knock on some doors and ask around with friends and family to see who needs help managing their pets and property. Your duties would be walking, feeding and entertaining the dog, and/or keeping the house safe, secure and tidy for your employer. The ideal situation is acquiring a group of clients that live near each other, which will allow you to optimize your time, while charging each of them the same rate. People minding Many families need caregiving services for children or grandparents. In both cases, you would be responsible for caring for your employer’s family members, just like you do when you babysit. This is a minimum wage gig and the hours would vary. Serving at a restaurant Working at a restaurant and bar (assuming you are 18 years of age) can be especially worthwhile because it combines social interaction with a paycheque. The base wage for service is minimum wage, but the gratuities can be many hundreds of dollars in a week. Carnivals and festivals Massive events and expos happen in every major city during the summer and offer temporary employment opportunities for up to two weeks. For example, working for the food trucks at the Calgary Stampede every summer for 10 very long days. Freelance services What are you good at that people want? Fixing computers, writing columns, building blogs, de-cluttering houses? If you’ve got an entrepreneurial mindset, get the word out about the exclusive service you’ll be offering for a limited time this summer. Set up a window-washing service in your neighbourhood, for example. YMCA Hiring Event The YMCA will be coming to the Youth Employment Centre on Friday, May 25th for a hiring event! Apply for This Way Ahead Calgary. http://ow.ly/5uFf30iTyHt Planning for 2019 admission to UBC (grade 10 & 11 students) Starting in 2019, UBC is changing how we evaluate you for admission. Plan for your 2019 application to UBC now by finding out what's changing and what's not changing for admission 2019. You must still meet UBC’s general and degree-specific admission requirements UBC’s general and degree-specific admission requirements have not changed. If you’ve already selected your Grade 11 (junior level) and Grade 12 (senior level) courses based on UBC’s general and degree-specific requirements, you’ll still meet these requirements for 2019 admission to UBC. You must still: -Graduate from secondary school; -Meet the English Language Admission Standard (if you haven’t completed at least three years of full-time study in Canada); and -Meet the Grade 11 (junior level) and Grade 12 (senior level) degree-specific requirements. You’ll find those general and degree-specific requirements on the Canadian high schools and international high schools pages of this website: http://you.ubc.ca/applying-ubc/2019-admission/ You should still focus on your achievements beyond academics The Personal Profile is a very important part of UBC’s online application. It helps UBC assess whether you are prepared for university studies by telling the University what you’ve learned about your experiences, about your academic and extracurricular achievements, and about your leadership qualities. UBC will look at more than just your grades in a limited number of academic Grade 12 (senior level) courses. UBC will now consider all Grade 11 (junior level) and Grade 12 (senior level) courses when evaluating the competitiveness of your application. Admission requirements While there is not a strict minimum number of courses, UBC recommends that if you’re graduating from a Canadian secondary school, you should plan to present six Grade 12-level (senior level) academic or non-academic courses (including Grade 12-level courses taken in your Grade 11 or junior year). If you have fewer than the recommended number of senior-level courses, UBC will consider this on a case-by-case basis. Randstad's list of the most in-demand jobs in Canada for 2018: 10. Forklift Operator: The rise of e-commerce has birthed an increase in warehouses and fulfillment centres in Canada, requiring forklift operators to move and handle merchandise. According to Randstad, employers will often sponsor training in exchange for a commitment to their company. 9. Software Engineer: Every industry requires software to function, and Randstad describes software engineering as a candidate-driven field, meaning applicants can have their pick of jobs in 2018. 8. Account Manager: In charge of keeping clients happy, account managers can help make or break a business' bottom line. 7. IT Project Manager: It's not just about being tech-savvy. IT project managers also need to be able to manage people, time, and budgets to be successful. 6. Customer Service Representative: Positions are becoming more complicated, Levy says, and customer service representative jobs will have a technology side to them too. Randstad says job-seekers who can use customer relations management (CRM) software will have a huge advantage over others. 5. Business Analyst: Business analysts require both technology skills and financial knowledge, but Randstad says Canadians will be able to find jobs that lean more on one or the other. 4. Engineering Project Manager: Randstad points to engineering as one of the fastest growing sectors in Canada, due in no small part to a bustling housing market and a federal government keen to fund infrastructure projects. Levy says a booming construction industry in Canada has increased the demand for engineers and manufacturing labour. 3. Accountant: A Chartered Professional Account (CPA) designation is the gold standard for this profession, which is in high demand this year. 2. Sales Representative: Salespeople are the second-most in demand, especially those who can sell products and services to other businesses. 1. General Labourer: Digital growth and companies like Amazon have driven an increase in the need for general labour, making this the most needed role in Canada, Levy says. Handy work, general manufacturing labour, cleaning and loading tasks, and more will make general labourers the most sought-after employees in 2018. Careers in Sports Event!
