University of Calgary Admissions Process The message to grade 10 and 11 students is that their grade 11 scores are important, for two reasons: The first is that they are almost always utilized during the Standard Admission process and can greatly impact a student’s admissibility. For instance, if a student requires Math 30-1 for admittance but is completing it during their second grade 12 term, we cannot use it within the initial assessment. Instead, we look back at the grade 11 equivalent for use in the admissions average. If we were to wait until Math 30-1 was finished the program would already be full. The second reason grade 11 grades are important has to do with the competitiveness of our programs. This year we will make the majority of our offers before June, especially now that we are assessing second choices early. Many wonder why we require five specific 30-level subjects if they are not used in the initial assessment and this comes down to pre-requisites. The five 30-level pre-requisites we require for entrance are intended for registration and final admission. Since we want to make offers earlier than July we use the fall term grades and combine them with grade 11 scores where required. There is a misunderstanding that we use self-reported scores at UCalgary. We used to accept them but they have not been considered for a number of years. Apply Alberta mandates that students enter their self-reported grades into the application but we do not consider them at all. Sadly, we cannot change this yet. 2018 US College Expo Registration is now open for the 2018 US College Expo taking place at the Arts Commons building in downtown Calgary. We would love to have students and their parents attend the US College Expo that brings recruiters from across the United States for an interactive program. This event gives students the unique opportunity to have hundreds of US Colleges in one place with the chance to engage with College reps and speak face-to-face. We also have speakers who help explain new US admissions processes, college specializations, financing programs, student athlete considerations and much more. This is a free event for students and their parents to attend. Saturday April 21st, 2018: 11:00 am – 2:00 pm: US College Expo for students and parents to attend at the Arts Commons. Students who wish to discuss self-identification on their UBC application with an advisor for Aboriginal students can connect with us at [email protected]. Métis Scholar Awards You may qualify for financial assistance through the Métis Scholar Awards program that provides financial support in years one to three of your certificate, diploma or undergraduate program. Depending upon the institution, Métis Scholar Awards may also be available for graduate studies. Final year financial assistance (the last two semesters) is available for students via the RLI Higher Learning Completion program. The Métis Scholar Awards program is funded through endowment agreements negotiated at post-secondary institutions across Alberta through the Métis Education Foundation (MEF) and RLI. The endowments and awards are administered directly by each post-secondary institution. Métis Scholar Awards are available and all applications must be submitted directly to the appropriate post-secondary institution.
